York Council approves plans for affordable homes scheme for key workers

Plans for more than 100 homes, which will be offered to key workers in York have been approved subject to a final decision by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Angela Raynor due to it being built on green belt land.

Jomast and Together Housing said the development on land to the east of New Lane in Huntington was aimed at people who have become increasingly priced out of York.

The site is a plot of land located between Huntington village centre and the Monks Cross retail development, near the New Lane cemetery. There is a strong road, cycling, and walking network into Huntington, as well as sustainable travel options nearby via the Monks Cross Park & Ride.

The plans include a mix of homes ranging in size from two to four-bedroom homes, along with public open space.

The application pointed out just 461 additional affordable homes were delivered in York between 2013 and 2019. It added the increase in supply during that time was 77 when homes lost through the Right to Buy scheme were taken into account.

The planning application stated: “The housing will be offered with a period of exclusivity to local key workers in the city, such as NHS staff, social and care workers, school workers, civil servants, and emergency service workers.

“The proposed scheme will help meet an existing and growing critical need for affordable housing in York.”

Jomast’s Development Director Adam Hearld said, “This will help address the critical need for affordable housing for local people who’ve been locked out of the York housing market.

“We recognise these housing challenges, and we’re proposing a period of exclusivity for key workers.

“The site is in a highly sustainable location in close proximity to everyday services; ecological and landscape aspects have been considered with generous public spaces provided.”

Jomast and Together Housing already have a proven track record of delivering affordable housing schemes in Yorkshire. The rented homes would be managed by Together Housing, and the shared ownership homes sold by the sales brand, Together Homes.
